Reader’s Service Section
The library reader’s services assistance to the library users for effective, efficient and easier access. We may categorize library reader’s service section work as sixdifferent types, and these are as follows:
1. Reference service
2. Periodical service
3. Circulation services
4. Study rooms facility
5. Library Rules & regulation
6. Effective use of library materials
Reference Service
Reference section is basically established to provide reference service to the readers. A reader would not able to find any thing from the library until he is assisted by the staff of that particular section who are basically reference staff. The objectives of reference section are of two folds nature.
i) Assistance to clientele in becoming acquainted with the scope and character of library.
ii) Instruction of the clientele in the most effective method of using library materials and facilities.
Periodical Service
The periodicals section is the place where needed information can be found in journals, magazines, newspapers and other serial literature. The open shelf system is adopted in this section. Bound Periodicals and back issues are arranged alphabetically by title. Current issues are properly displayed on the display racks.
Collection in this section is for inside use only. Photocopying of materials may be request. However, back issues may be borrowed for home use upon request and approval by the library-in -charge.
Library Circulation Service
The main public service point of a library is the circulation desk or loans desk, usually found near the main entrance of a library.
Objectives of library Circulation Service:
i) Adopting effective charging and discharging system
ii) It provides lending services.
iii) Renewal of materials and payment of fines are also handled at the circulation desk
Library Circulation Work: Library Circulation work includes:
1. Registration of members
2. Lending of documents
3. Changing of over-due
4. Reservation of books
5. Renewal of books
6. Maintenance of records
7. Maintenance of statistics
8. Inter library loans
4. Study Room facility
For proper library reading room facilities the library should take the following steps:
i. The library building should be attracting.
ii. There should be proper lighting and ventilation.
iii. Its wall should be colured and illustration on the wall.
iv. Library reading room should need neat and clean.
v. Library reading room must be kept soundless.
Library Rules & Regulations
We found different types of rules and regulations in a library. For example,
i. Readers and visitors are requested not to bring their belongs in the library.
ii. Silence and discipline must be maintains in the library premises.(পরিপাটি)
iii. Eating in the library is strictly prohibited.
iv. Users are requested not to reshelf the books.
v. Photocopy service is available only for library materials against payment.
vi. Marking library books with pencil or ink, tearing the pages or spoiling the same is strictly prohibited.
vii.Newspaper and magazines will not be issued in
outdoor use.
viii. Reference materials will not be issued for any
reason.
ix. Maximum of 4 books will be issued to one reader for 14 days only.
Effective use of library Materials
To make effective use of all library materials we should consider two steps. And these are as followings:
i. Survey readers’ needs
ii. Library publicity
i. Survey readers’ needs: For ensuring the effective use of library materials, surveys and analysis of readers’ needs are essential. It helps the librarian to know what kinds of book they like and which type of materials they dislike.
ii. Library Publicity: The publicity helps the library users to keep him up-to-date with the library collection. Library publicity program is very important for a library. Because this types of program introduces all library materials and services offered by a library and information center.
Conclusion:
Standing in the summit of conclusion, we can say that library is the backbone of a nation and readers are the backbone of a library. Therefore, Libraries’ main focus is to provide readership. To provide adequate service to the readers, the in-house activities must be obeyed.
